privacy
& security
With every decision we make at Spec, privacy comes first. It’s not an add-on or an afterthought; it’s built into how Spec works from the ground up.
Local-first approach
Spec runs locally on your Mac, not our servers. The Spec team never sees, stores, or collects your personal data.
Consent built in
While Spec may propose suggested actions, nothing is sent without your explicit approval. You can decline an action or remove Spec anytime.
Spec is designed so that your privacy isn’t just protected, it’s the starting point of the product. You get the full Spec experience — fast, private, and reliable — without giving up control of your data.
Spec lives on your Mac. Behind the scenes, it connects directly with trusted providers like Anthropic and OpenAI so your requests are processed instantly and securely, in order to deliver the best overall experience. (Read more about this below).
The Spec mobile app is a secure remote control for the Spec on your Mac.
• Spec connects your iPhone and Mac through iCloud with end-to-end encryption.
• By default, it doesn’t read or store anything from your phone on a server, it’s simply your phone talking securely to your Mac.
Coming Soon
Spec only acts when you ask it to. It won’t run tasks, send messages, change appointments, or move files without your say-so. You can stop it anytime by either declining a request or uninstalling the app.
Your options:
• Delete anytime: All you have to do is uninstall the app.
• Full access, but always in your hands: Spec works best with broad access across your Mac. It never takes action without approval, and you can uninstall anytime.
• Transparency: You can always see what Spec is doing and why.
Spec partners with trusted AI providers Anthropic and OpenAI to deliver the best experience possible.
When you ask Spec to help with a task, here’s what happens:
Spec runs locally on your Mac and prepares your request.
Your request is sent directly (and securely) to Anthropic or OpenAI.
They process it in real time and send the result straight back to your Mac.
Nothing is used to train their models.
Why these providers?
• Industry-leading security: Both Anthropic and OpenAI use strong encryption and security practices.
• No training on your data: By default, they don’t use API data to train their models.
• Real-time only: They process requests as they come in and return results instantly.
• Your emails, messages, and documents stay on your device
• The Spec team doesn’t see, save, or store your data
• Any AI requests are handled through encrypted, temporary connections
• You decide exactly what Spec can access and share
What Spec doesn’t do:
• Store copies of your iMessages, emails, photos, or files
• Keep your data remotely after a task is done
• Train AI models on your personal information
• Share your data with anyone other than the trusted AI provider needed to complete your task
What Spec does do:
• Put you in control of what it can access
• Let you delete everything anytime by uninstalling the app
• Use secure, encrypted connections whenever outside processing is needed
